The Five Milkshakes That Shook Chicago
Ice cream never tastes more delicious than under the grueling Chicago sun in the thick of the summer season. Thankfully, there are quite a few delicious ice cream joints in the city, many of which serve arguably the world’s most delicious beverage: the milkshake. The following are five of our favorite milkshake spots in the city of Chicago:
Edzo’s Burger Shop – Sometimes the best things in life come in paper cups. There’s nothing fancy about the shakes at Edzo’s Burger Shop, a diner that takes the best parts of eating at a greasy spoon and somehow makes them classier. Eddie, the chef at Edzo’s, is a culinary school graduate who spend time in Barcelona and Bologna learning about high-class eating, all of which shows up now in his restaurant, which features some truly amazing shakes, arguably the best of which is the Nutella shake, available for under $5.
DMK Burger Bar – How would you like to try a churro shake? Does a birthday cake shake tickle your fancy? What about a Lucky Charms shake? The good folks at DMK love getting creative with their Shake of the Month selections, but even their standard flavors are out of this world. In fact, for $5 extra, they’ll even add some alcohol to it (if you’re over 21, of course). Owners David Morton (the entrepreneur) and Michael Kornick (the culinary expertise) opened their first DMK Burger Bar in 2009 and now have locations at some of the city’s biggest tourist stops, including Solider Field and Navy Pier.
Tiztal Café’ – If you’ve never had an Oatmeal Shake from Tiztal before, trust us that it’s a whole lot better than it sounds. This isn’t some lumpy breakfast mush in a cup, but rather a smooth, ice-cold milkshake that mixes vanilla and oatmeal flavors in a way that is frankly a delicious mystery. Banana and Pecan Oatmeal Shakes are equally delicious at this family-run Mexican breakfast oasis. Come for the shakes, stay for the chilaquiles!
25 Degrees – While DMK Burger Bar will add liquor if you want it, many of the milkshakes at 25 Degrees, a restaurant named after the precise temperature between a raw and well-done burger, are concocted specifically to include undertones of adult beverages. The NOLA, for example, features Southern Comfort and praline liquor, while the Irish Car Bomb is essentially a chocolate milkshake that also includes Bailey’s, Milkstout and Jameson. One common favorite, however, is the Salty Caramel, which features Maker’s Mark and a house-made butterscotch sauce. There are 25 Degrees locations all over the world, but the one in Chicago is definitely worth a stop!
Shake Shack – We know it may be sacrilege to include a chain restaurant’s milkshake on this list, but these custard-based shakes are too smooth and creamy to leave off, no matter how many of these restaurants have popped up around the country. What started as a food cart in New York City has become one of the more beloved shake stops in Chicago, and now we can enjoy Black & White shakes in the Windy City, too!
What’s the point of living in a city with great milkshakes if you don’t get out there enjoy them? There are so many, so use your summer to taste some of the best of them!
